The Art of Kokeshi Dolls
Kokeshi dolls, originating from the Tohoku region in northern Honshu, have been crafted for over 150 years. These wooden dolls, with their distinct lack of arms and legs, are handmade and feature a simple trunk and head design.
Design and Craftsmanship
Kokeshi dolls are painted with floral or ring patterns in colors like red, black, and occasionally green, purple, blue, or yellow. The painted designs are often sealed with a layer of wax, giving them a polished finish.
Signatures and Modern Evolution
Since the 1950s, kokeshi makers have started signing their creations, typically on the bottom of the doll and occasionally on the back. This marks a shift toward recognizing the individual artistry behind each piece.
